Curator’s note: The Immortal Olympian Ideals Interpreted in Modern Aesthetics

A minimalist aesthetic, coupled with a commanding presence, defines this exceptional piece of illuminated art.

With a nod to the ancient Olympic Games and the ideals they epitomise, The Olympian lighting installation from the Roumelight collection embodies modernity through timeless simplicity and the refined elegance of Hellenic tradition.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic Discobolus motif of ancient Hellenic sculpture and iconography, the graceful outlines of a body poised in potential motion reflect the earnest and conscientious effort exerted by the depicted discus thrower, and the expenditure of physical energy in his exertion. It captures the moment of stasis just before release.

The laurel wreath adorning his brow echoes the era evoked by the ancient athletic competitions. It underscores the enduring significance of the ancient Hellenic honorary symbol of praise for triumph and achievement, awarded principally to victors in athletic games, including the ancient Olympics, wherein it was fashioned from wild olive and known as kotinos. Even in contemporary times, the laurel wreath remains a widely recognised symbol of glory and honour.

The chosen crimson illumination further incarnates the enduring Olympian spirit, lending a sensuous contour to the figure’s form, and simultaneously evoking a sense of dynamic tension.

The work presents a markedly different aspect when unlit in a well-lit room compared to its illuminated state in a darkened or dimly lit space. When lit, the illuminated athlete assumes a distinct spiritual role, transcending eras. He imbues the darkened space with light and soul, allowing glorious moments from antiquity to flourish.

In the case of The Olympian lighting installation, the Olympian ethics, as established by the ancient Hellenes, with their emphasis on fair play, good sportsmanship, and civility, serve as an inspirational point of reference for contemporary artistic creation, defying the relentless passage of time.

No modern interpretation can rival the power of ancient archetypes when respectfully reimagined, a feat masterfully achieved by the Roumelight brand.
