Curator’s note: A fictional portrait of the main hero of P.I. Tchaikovsky’s well-known lyric opera ‘Eugene Onegin’, based on the self-titled classic novel in verse of Russian literature written by Alexander Pushkin.
Since the painter was mainly inspired by musical compositions this specific painting, with its musical vocabulary, takes on an elegiac feeling and becomes a kind of visual poem on age. In this poetic description, light fades, the shadows deepen and all exacting details vanish. This minimalistic approach focus on the display of the ‘essence’ of the lyric hero, as the main subject of the painting, and creates a contemplative mood that allows it to be best appreciated by the viewer.
